Oh man thats rough. If you are both in a class or something together you can ask a question based on that. If not, you can ask him about something that's on him, like his shoes or hat. Say ';hey, thats a pretty cool hat. I'm racking my brain trying to think of a gift to get for a friend. I think he'd like something like that...where'd you get it from?';
